Instructions
Put the Instant Pot on “Sauté” and melt the olive oil and butter together. Add the thinly sliced onions to the pot and stir them around a few times a few times for about 15 to 20 minutes, until they turn caramelized and golden brown.
To the pot, add the minced garlic, sugar, and dried thyme. Cook for another minute or two, until the food smells good.
If you want to deglaze the pot, add the dry white wine and scrape up any brown bits on the bottom.
Fill the pot with beef broth. Add salt and black pepper to taste. Then stir everything well. Put the Instant Pot’s lid on tight and make sure the valve is set to “Sealing.”
Then, set the pot to “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” mode and wait 10 minutes. After the cooking time is up, let the pressure drop naturally for about 10 minutes.
Then, carefully turn the valve to “Venting” to let out any extra pressure. Warm up the broiler in your oven while the soup is cooking.
Use bowls that can go in the oven to pour the hot soup into. Add a slice of baguette to the top of each bowl.
A lot of grated Gruyere or Swiss cheese should be spread out over the bread slices. Put the bowls on a baking sheet and put them under the broiler in the oven for two to three minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
Use oven mitts to carefully take the bowls out of the oven; they will be hot. You can serve the Instant Pot French Onion Soup right away and top it with fresh thyme or parsley if you like.
Tips for RecipeÂ
Mix yellow and red onions together to make your French Onion Soup taste more interesting.
Allow the onions to develop their natural sweetness and depth of flavor by cooking them slowly until they turn caramelized. The key is low and slow.
It helps the onions become caramelized faster and brings out their natural sweetness by adding a teaspoon of sugar.Use vegetable broth instead of beef broth to make it vegetarian.
If you want a thicker soup, you can add a tablespoon of flour to the onions after they have turned brown and stir them around well before adding the broth.
Don’t forget to broil the bread slices with cheese on top. It gives the soup a nice crunch and more flavor.
