Slow-Cooker French Onion Soup Recipe-Simplest Recipe Ever :- My husband’s favorite food of all time is French Onion Soup. It’s a great meal for people who love soup!

The bread and cheese are what matter to me… all soaked in that rich onion soup with herbs and spices, and then broiled until the cheese gets nice and hot. Taking the first bite of that gooey cheese is like getting a taste of heaven.

I like French Onion Soup, but I believe a good broth needs a lot of time to really taste great. That’s why I love this dish.

Along with this recipe, the onions and broth can blend in the slow cooker all day, making a thick and tasty soup. I also really like slow cooker meals because I love getting home to a ready-made dinner!

Why do they Call It French Onion Soup?

French onion soup has been a traditional French soup since the 18th century. Its roots can be traced back to France. This soup is usually a beginning, but we love to eat it as a main dish with extra bread and a salad.

 Ingredients :

  • 3 large white onions sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 64 ounces beef broth (I use reduced sodium)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • ⅓ cup dry sherry
  • 4 sprigs fresh thyme (or 1 teaspoon dried thyme)
  • 1 Bay Leaf
  • 8 slices dry French bread
  • ¾ cup Gruyere cheese shredded
  • ½ cup Emmental cheese shredded
  • 6 tablespoons fresh Parmesan cheese shredded

Instructions :

Over medium-low heat, cook the onions, butter, and brown sugar in a large nonstick pan until they turn yellow and caramelized. (20 minutes or so).
Once it’s golden, add it to the slow cooker with everything else but the bread and cheese.
Set the stove to low and leave it there for 6 to 8 hours.
Take out the bay leaf and throw it away. Then, pour the soup into bowls. Add cheeses and dry bread pieces on top. For two to three minutes, or until the cheese melts and turns brown, broil.

How do you Make French Onion Soup from Scratch :

If you want to make French onion soup from scratch, you should start by making your own broth or stock. I don’t usually make chicken broth from scratch, but for this dish I use store-bought broth that has less salt. Both will work fine.

It does take a little while to caramelize the onions, but it’s well worth the time. Low and slow heat is best for these because you want them to be clear and golden without getting brown or crispy. You don’t have to stir them all the time, but you should watch them so they don’t cook too fast.

You can brown them in your slow cooker too, but it will take 8–10 hours. I do it on the stove top because it’s easier that way. You can start them the night before and wake up to sautéed onions. Just add the rest of the ingredients and you’re ready to go!

How to Caramelize Onions in the Slow Cooker :

Add 3 pounds of sliced onions, 1/2 cup of pure butter, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt to a bowl. Put it on low for 8 to 10 hours and stir it. For this dish, you’ll need half of these onions.

You can add more if you want, though. The other half can be frozen and used in soups, mashed potatoes, casseroles, and more. Note that if you use this method, you won’t need brown sugar because the onions already have enough sugar in them.

Notes :

Not any dry bread? Cut the loaf into slices and dry it in the oven at 300°F for 5 to 7 minutes. Cool down completely.
