Sonic Drive-In is a fast food franchise that sells its distinctive drink, Sonic Ocean Water. It is well-known for both its flavour and vivid blue hue. Although it’s a non-alcoholic beverage, I’m going to provide you an extra trick to make your Sonic Copycat Ocean Water spicier for your upcoming (adult) get-together!
Ingredients
- 16 little neck clams in shell, scrubbed
- 16 uncooked, shell-on jumbo shrimp*
- 16 sea scallops
- 4 ears corn on the cob, husked and cut into quarters OR 1 pound small par-boiled new potatoes**
- 16 cherry tomatoes
- 4 tablespoons butter
- Zest of one lemon, plus optional use of lemon wedges
- 2 teaspoons Old Bay
- 6 tablespoons white wine or beer (could substitute seafood stock or chicken broth)
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives and/or fresh parsley
Instructions
Place four heavy-duty aluminium foil pieces, measuring 18 by 12 inches, on the counter or a level surface, or use two layers of ordinary foil. Set an outside grill over medium heat and give the grates a quick oiling.
In the centre of each foil piece, arrange 4 clams, 4 shrimp, 4 scallops, 4 pieces of corn on the cob or ¼ of parboiled potatoes, and 4 cherry tomatoes.
Spread a spoonful of butter (I cube each piece and distribute it evenly) over each mound. Sprinkle each packet with a ½ teaspoon of Old Bay and 1½ tablespoons of either white wine, beer, or broth after removing the zest from ¼ of a lemon.

Each foil sheet should have its two short ends brought together and folded over multiple times to seal. Make space for steam. Repeatedly fold the remaining ends over to completely seal the packet. (Preparation tip: At this stage, the packets can be chilled for up to two hours by placing them on a rimmed baking sheet.)
After preheating the grill, place the foil packets on it, cover it and bake for about 15 minutes, or until the clams are open and the prawns are pink and opaque. (Tip: After 12 to 13 minutes, carefully open a packet to ensure it’s done. Cooking times will vary depending on the grill. After 14 minutes, our last packets were cooked to perfection.)
To serve, arrange the foil packets on separate plates, cut a “X” in the foil, and then peel back the foil. Be cautious when unfolding the top; the steam will be scorching. Garnish each packet with parsley or chives and, if preferred, present it with a wedge of lemon.

Notes
In the time it takes for the remaining ingredients to cook completely, smaller prawns may overcook. I think jumbos function really well.
It’s crucial to steam, microwave, or otherwise cook the potatoes before using them, as they’ll stay undercooked once the seafood is cooked through.
I normally steam them until they are just soft, but it’s okay if they are still somewhat al dente. The potatoes can be left at room temperature until you’re ready to assemble the packets, if you do this earlier in the day.
