French Toast Casserole Recipe – Learn with Experts
Ingredients :
- ½ a loaf of French bread, (about 8 oz) cut into cubes
- ½ cup butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 6 eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon, divided
- 1 Tablespoon brown sugar, for topping
- powdered sugar for topping, optional
Instructions :
Warm the oven up to 425 degrees. Put some butter in a 13×9-inch baking pan and set it aside.
Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. After the butter has melted, add the brown sugar and stir until it is smooth. Spread the mix out evenly in the bottom of a 9×13 pan.
Spread the bread cubes out on top of the brown sugar and butter mixture in the pan.
Mix the eggs, milk, sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon in a medium-sized bowl using a whisk. On top of the bread cubes, pour the egg mixture, making sure that all of the bread is covered.
Add the last teaspoon of cinnamon and the last tablespoon of brown sugar.
After the oven is hot, bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Take them out of the oven and, if you want, sprinkle them with powdered sugar. Have fun!
Notes :
Best Bread to Use: For this dish, I like to use French bread. The bread should be dry but not too soft. Therefore, it can better soak up the tasty casserole sauce and keeps the French toast from getting too soft.
Pumpkin Pie Cinnamon Rolls Recipe
If you have time, cut your French bread into cubes and lay them out in a single layer on a cookie sheet overnight, or for about 12 hours. This will help the bread dry out before you bake it.
This recipe works with sourdough, brioche, or Italian bread too, but I personally love French bread!
Freezer Option: As long as you make the casserole in a baking dish that can go in the freezer, like a disposable aluminum foil pan, and bake it as suggested, you can freeze it.
After baking, let it cool completely. Foil and plastic wrap the food, then freeze it for up to three months. Before baking, put the casserole in the fridge for about 24 hours to fully defrost.
Cover the dish and heat it again at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes.
Make Ahead Option: You can make this recipe ahead of time, and it’s a great choice for a busy morning or a holiday breakfast. Just follow the directions until the last step, which is baking.
Place the dish in the fridge overnight with the plastic wrap covering it. In the morning, bake it as directed.
Gluten Free and Dairy Free Options: This recipe can be made with gluten-free French bread, and the butter and milk can be swapped out for anything else.
For the milk, you can use almond milk, coconut milk, soy milk, or any other dairy-free milk you like. For the butter, you can use coconut oil or dairy-free butter. There would be a 1:1 split between all of these changes.
