It is possible to prepare this dish in advance, and it freezes quite well either before or after it has been baked! Upon a white plate is a slice of homemade lasagna that has been baked. Even though there are a few steps involved in making homemade lasagna, each step is simple, and I can guarantee you that it is well worth the time because it is the ideal Italian dish.

Ingredients

  • 12 lasagna noodles uncooked
  • 4 cups mozzarella cheese shredded and divided
  • ½ cup parmesan cheese shredded and divided

Tomato Sauce

  • ½ pound lean ground beef
  • ½ pound Italian sausage
  • 1 onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 36 ounces pasta sauce *see note
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Cheese Mixture

  • 2 cups ricotta cheese
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley chopped
  • 1 egg beaten

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a large saucepan filled with salted water, bring the lasagna noodles to a boil until they reach the al dente stage, as directed on the package. Remove the liquid, wash it under cold water, and set it away.

Brown the meat, sausage, onion, and garlic in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat until there is no trace of pink left. Get rid of any fat. The spaghetti sauce, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ¼ teaspoon of black pepper should be mixed in with a stirring motion. Over medium heat, simmer the mixture uncovered for five minutes, or until it has thickened.

Take a separate bowl and mix together 1 ½ cups of mozzarella cheese, ¼ cup of parmesan cheese, ricotta cheese, parsley, egg, and ¼ teaspoon of salt and mix well. Cover a 9×13 pan or casserole dish with one cup of the meat sauce and spread it out evenly.

Place three lasagna noodles on top of it. Using a third of the ricotta cheese mixture and one cup of beef sauce, layer the ingredients. More than twice, repeat. Complete the dish by topping three noodles with the leftover sauce. Place the foil on top, and bake for forty-five minutes.

Once the foil has been removed, proceed to sprinkle the remaining 2 ½ cups of mozzarella cheese and ¼ cup of parmesan cheese over the surface. Cook for a further fifteen minutes, or until the surface is golden and bubbling. If preferred, broil for two to three minutes. After allowing it to rest for at least fifteen minutes, chop it.

Notes

Note on the sauce: In this recipe, approximately one cup of beef sauce is included in each layer. The amount of pasta sauce should be increased to 48 ounces if you would want your lasagna to have additional sauce. Different brands of spaghetti sauce may call for different amounts of salt to be added. After it has simmered, taste it and season it.

Layers of cheese The layers of cheese are relatively thin; if you would like a layer of cheese that is more substantial, you can divide the cheese in half and apply it to the first two levels, and then the third layer should only include meat sauce. After putting this to the test with additional ricotta cheese, we discovered that it was too much for the lasagna.

Helps Save Time A helpful hint: Instead of boiling the lasagna sheets, use fresh sheets that may be obtained in the deli section. If you are using fresh lasagna, there is no need to boil it first. After removing the lasagna from the oven, allow it to set or rest for at least fifteen minutes (but thirty to forty-five minutes is acceptable). Because of this, it will not get runny, and it will also allow it to maintain its shape when it is cut. During the warming process, resting is not required.
