Easy Homemade Doughnut Holes Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour , (I always use unbleached)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar , use less for a less-sweet donut hole
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg , optional
  • 1 large egg

  • 1 cup milk , I use whole
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • oil for frying, (canola, peanut, or vegetable are good choices)

Instructions

  • Spread a few layers of paper towels on a large baking sheet, and place a wire cooling rack on top. Put aside.
  • Add oil to a heavy-based pan (deep cast iron pans or Dutch ovens work great for frying) until the oil is about two inches deep. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 350 degrees Fahrenheit. To keep the temperature at 350 degrees, adjust the heat level as necessary.
  • In a sizable mixing basin, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg while the oil is cooking. Beat the egg, vanilla, and milk together in a another mixing dish.

  • Transfer the liquid components into the basin containing the dry ingredients and mix briefly with a wooden spoon. Stir in melted butter and continue to stir until a thick batter forms.

  • Use a cookie scoop to scoop up batter and drop it into the hot oil once it reaches 350 degrees Fahrenheit. To reduce splashing, drop the batter carefully, slightly over the oil! Burns from hot oil are extremely painful and should not be taken lightly!

  • In one batch, add roughly 8 donut holes to the oil, and cook for 2 minutes on each side. Take out the fried doughnuts and place them on the baking sheet or cooling rack that has been prepared.

Regarding Sugared Donut Hole:

  • Fill a shallow basin with roughly a cup of granulated sugar. After removing the cooked doughnut holes from the oil, place them in the bowl of sugar and toss to evenly coat them with sugar. Place on a cooling rack to finish cooling.

Regarding the gaping doughnut holes:
  • After a minute or so of cooling on a wire rack, dip the donut holes into the ganache sauce. To complete cooling, return to the cooling rack. Alternatively, you can drizzle the ganache sauce over the donut holes by dipping a fork into the sauce and waving it back and forth.

FAQs AND QUESTIONs

Do you have to fry donut holes?

  • Not always! You must fry them if you want the traditional donut flavor and texture—crisp on the outside and fluffy inside. However, I baked small portions of the dough for these chai vanilla donuts in mini muffin tins, and the result was delightfully baked donut holes. Therefore, the texture that you like is entirely up to you.
