How to Make Homemade Apple Pie Filling
As simple as apple pie, as the adage goes, and that is precisely this recipe!
Apples are peeled, sliced, and then placed to a pan along with some water, sugar, and cinnamon.
Thicken: I use a small amount of cornflour to make this apple pie filling thicker when it’s soft. The “saucy” portion is made up of any apple juice that has leaked.
Variations
Cut the apples into pieces or use apple slices.
To add a caramel flavour, substitute brown sugar for white sugar.
Pour in a tsp of lemon juice.
I use ground cinnamon, but you can use your favourite warm spice blend, apple pie spice, pumpkin pie spice, or even a small amount of nutmeg.
How to Freeze Apple Pie Filling
This filling for apple pie tastes great and can be made ahead of time. We mostly use it to swap out cans of pie filling in recipes; I don’t precook the filling when I make an apple pie from scratch. Of course, you can freeze this filling if you decide to prepare it.
Just prepare as stated, then let cool. In a freezer bag, freeze. Before using, let it defrost in the refrigerator for a whole night and proceed as you would with fresh!
