Best Chocolate-covered Marshmallows Recipe
Ingredients
- 1-2 10-ounce bags semi-sweet chocolate chips see notes
- 1-2 tablespoons coconut oil or shortening see notes
- 1 12-ounce bag standard-size or jumbo marshmallows OR 1 batch homemade marshmallows
Optional decorations:
- Sprinkles
- Contrasting chocolate almond bark, or candy melts
- Lollipop or cake-pop sticks
Instructions
Put the chocolate chips and shortening (or coconut oil) in a bowl that is safe to microwave. For one minute, microwave. Mix thoroughly. After every 15 seconds, continue heating the chocolate in the microwave, stirring, until it melts and becomes glossy.
Each marshmallow should be picked up with a toothpick and dipped into the melted chocolate. You can dip them all the way or just halfway. Homemade marshmallows are lighter and fluffier than marshmallows from the store, so you might need to use a fork to help take them out of the chocolate while dipping.
To get extra chocolate out of the marshmallows’ bottoms, use a fork or the bowl’s edge. Place dipped marshmallows on a baking sheet covered with paper.
Sprinkles can be added right away while the chocolate is still wet for decoration.
For extra decorating, you can drizzle melted chocolate, candy melts, or almond bark in a contrasting color over the dipped marshmallows.
Until the chocolate hardens, allow the dipped marshmallows to cool on the parchment paper.
Keep enclosed in a sealed container.
Notes
The amount of chocolate chips you plan to dip your marshmallows in will determine how many bags you need. To fully dip, you’ll need two bags; to dip halfway, you’ll need one. For every 10-ounce bag of chocolate chips, use one tablespoon of shortening or coconut oil.
To get varied colors and flavors, try dipping the marshmallows in white, dark, or even candy melts chocolate!
CUTE AND EASY CHOCOLATE-COVERED MARSHMALLOWS
To be honest, I’ve made chocolate-covered marshmallows before.
I used to make Halloween marshmallow pops, dipping marshmallows in black and orange candy melts and then decorating with Halloween-themed sprinkles, a lot of years ago.
However, I kind of forgot about these until lately, when I came to the conclusion that they could be made for any occasion or holiday!
How cute are these, really? You can decorate them in a plethora of ways (see “decorating ideas” for some inspiration!). Additionally, you can upgrade them to a more sophisticated present by substituting homemade marshmallows for store-bought ones.
You can make this “recipe” (more like a food craft) with children of various ages.
Making these treats
Before you get started, line a baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper.
Add the chocolate chips and coconut oil or shortening to a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave the chocolate for 1 minute, then stir it well.
Continue to microwave for 15 seconds at a time, stirring after each increment, until the chocolate is melted and has a nice sheen to it.
Now it’s time to dip the marshmallows! Use a toothpick to pick up each marshmallow and dip it into the melted chocolate. You can dip them fully or just halfway – it’s up to you.
