Add Lilac Vine to Backyard Flower Gardens :- Planting vines will give your backyard flower gardens a stunning backdrop.
Take a moment to explore your garden as spring approaches to see how vines might enhance the beauty of your backyard. Growing flowers in beds and containers is a common emphasis for gardeners.

However, occasionally we overlook the fact that blooming vines may be planted on blank walls and fences to develop blooms, turning a wall into a lovely backdrop. Purple lilac vine is one of my faves.

Lilac Vine: Care and Growing Tips

I don’t really like to look at the block wall that encloses my property. Thus, I enjoy growing lilac vine against the wall. Purple flowers that bloom till early spring first arise in the midst of winter. For optimal flowering, plant it in a sunny location with well-draining soil. A trellis is necessary for support.

Also referred to as purple coral pea or Australian lilac, this plant is native to Australia. Lilac vine is a decent substitute for lilac bush (Syringa), which is well-known for fragrant spring blooms, and has similarly colored blooms; this is especially true for southern desert gardens.

Use Lilac Vine as a Ground Cover Plant

The majority of us have seen vines clinging to a wall or fence. However, have you considered utilizing them as a ground cover as well?

When I was a golf course horticulturist years ago, I was constantly itching to try something different in the highlight areas. I therefore planted ground cover with purple lilac vines one year.

I have to say that the outcomes exceeded my expectations. On the ground, the vines flourished greatly. About twice a year, we would trim them as necessary to prevent them from getting too big.

The vines formed a lovely ground cover even when they were devoid of blossoms.

We severely cut the vines back to around one foot every three years, which helped to revitalize them. Indeed, more than ten years later, the vines I planted around the golf course are still there.

How to Choose the Best Flowering Vine for Your Landscape

A local nursery professional can help you choose the perfect vine for your backyard flower garden by asking the following questions.

  • Is the vine deemed invasive in the area you live in?
  • Is a trellis necessary, or can it climb without one?
  • Which kind of exposure—full sun or shade—is ideal?
