Are you able to identify all magnolia blooms? Southern magnolias are everywhere, so most people can identify them by their creamy blossoms. But others are rarer. Can you differentiate lily and saucer magnolias? How about a star and Loebner magnolia? Some are harder than others, but with practice, you’ll master magnolias.
1. Bigleaf Magnolia
Bigleaf magnolia blooms are white with long segments of flowers that are frequently speckled with crimson. Some flowers have faint pinkish-purple tones all over the petals, while others have strong purplish red streaks at the base of the bloom where the petals meet the stamen. These magnolias have enormous leaves that can reach lengths of 12 to 36 inches, as suggested by their name.
2. Cucumber Tree
This kind of magnolia bears yellow and yellow-green flowers in the summer and can reach heights of 60 to 80 feet. ‘Koban Dori’ has canary yellow flowers, ‘Brenas’ has deep yellow ones, and M. acuminata subcordata has large flowers with a citrous scent. Mostly grown for their foliage, these trees don’t stand out for their blossoms.
3. Lily Magnolia
Both the common and scientific names for this magnolia, Magnolia lilliflora, refer to the tree’s beautiful, tulip-shaped, lily-like blooms. These blossoms have elongated petals with a creamy white centre and a purplish outer. The blooms of ‘Gracilis’ and ‘O’Neill’ are pink and purple.
4. Loebner Magnolia
The blossoms of the star magnolia are similar to those of the deciduous Loebner magnolia. These blooms are more widely distributed on the tree than M. stellata’s, and their strap-like flower segments are even longer and wider. ‘Ballerina’ has fragrant, blush pink flowers, but ‘Merrill’ has white ones.
5. Oyama Magnolia
M. sieboldii is a compact species of deciduous magnolia that has fragrant, white, cup-shaped blooms with eye-catching reddish-gold or reddish-green stamens. After the blossoms come pink oval-shaped fruits that split open to show beautiful orange and crimson seeds in the fall. ‘Michiko Regne’ and ‘Harold Epstein’ yield semi-double blooms.

6. Saucer Magnolia
These magnolia trees, often called “tulip trees” and “Chinese magnolias,” are named for their fragrant, spherical, cup-shaped blooms that come in pink, purple, and white hues. From late winter to April, they blossom, frequently ahead of the emergence of the deciduous leaves. ‘Lilliputian’ has pink and white blooms, ‘Rustica Rubra’ enormous reddish-purple blossoms, and ‘Alexandrina’ white centres and purple petals.
7. Southern Magnolia
This evergreen magnolia, commonly called Southern magnolia, is distinguished by large, fragrant white blooms and thick, glossy foliage. It is the official flower of Louisiana and Mississippi and blooms in the summer.
8. Star Magnolia
This type of magnolia yields unique blooms with elongated petal clusters. This variety of magnolia is smaller, growing to a maximum height of 15 to 20 feet and a maximum width of 10 to 15 feet when fully grown. This kind can be cultivated as a smaller tree or as a larger shrub due to its size. “Water Lily” yields pink buds and fragrant white flowers, “Jane Platt” blooms rosy pink, and “Centennial” provides white blossoms.
9. Sweetbay Magnolia
A different native of the South, the sweetbay magnolia resembles its near sister M. grandiflora but is smaller and more resilient to cold weather. Its lustrous dark green foliage contrast with its creamy white blooms. This tree is a great choice for patios and borders as it will only reach a height and width of 10 to 20 feet. In areas with mild coastal climates, this tree is evergreen; in regions with colder winters, it is deciduous.
10. Umbrella Magnolia
The peculiar greenish-yellow-tinged flower segments, purple stamens, and crimson seedpods are characteristics of umbrella magnolia blossoms. They can get up to 10 inches in diameter and have a strong scent.
11. Yulan Magnolia
This kind of magnolia has fragrant white flowers with an erect, tulip-like form. The junction of the bloom and stem of the flowers is frequently tinted purple. “Double Diamond” is an example that has a more intense overall bloom than the others, which makes it a stunning and eye-catching planting option.
