However, the mashed potatoes I make with my air fryer are very exceptional. Not to mention, there are countless possibilities for dipping sauce, garnishes, and seasoning!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound new potatoes mini potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon salt divided
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

Add the potatoes to a big pot and fill with water. Put a spoonful of salt on top and turn the heat up to high. Once fork tender, boil.

Set the air fryer’s temperature to 200°C/400°F.

The cooked potatoes should be put on a chopping board. Each potato should be gently pressed down and allowed to crack open, using a potato masher or a flat-bottomed cup.

Combine the olive oil and melted butter in a bowl. Make sure all sides of each mashed potato are thoroughly coated by dipping it into the butter-oil mixture. Add some salt for seasoning.

Air fry potatoes for 18 to 20 minutes, rotating them midway through, in a single layer.

FAQs

What is the difference between “mashed” and “smashed” potatoes?

Mashed potatoes are made by boiling potatoes until they become very soft, then mashing them with butter and cream until they become creamy and smooth.
To make mashed potatoes, the whole potatoes are still cooked, but they are then pressed flat and either baked or fried. In this manner, the potatoes maintain their wholeness while boasting a wonderfully crunchy outside and a soft, fluffy middle.

Do you have to boil the potatoes before air frying?

Though it’s not the only method, parboiling the potatoes makes them soft enough to flatten. Alternatively, you can microwave or cook the potatoes until they are easily mashed.

Why are my smashed potatoes falling apart?

If you cook the potatoes too long, this is what can happen. Don’t forget to boil them for only 15 to 20 minutes, or until they are barely fork tender.
