Simone Biles Performs Historic Yurchenko Double Pike Vault With Jump To Be Named After Her On Sunday, Simone Biles completed one of the hardest vaults in international gymnastics, making history. At the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Belgium, the four-time Olympic gold medalist became the first woman to land a Yurchenko double pike vault internationally. Watch the 26-year-old sprint down the runway, round off onto a springboard, back handspring onto the vaulting table, and two double flips. The crowd applauded her landing.

  • According to Reuters, the vault is the most difficult in women’s gymnastics, with an assigned difficulty score of 6.4. Team USA plans to rename the skill Biles II after its completion in international competition, adding to her already five skills.
  • Biles previously performed this vault in the U.S. in 2018, and only male gymnasts have done it internationally. It hasn’t been done before for a reason.
  • Laurent Landi, her coach, described the move as “very, very challenging” on “60 Minutes” in 2021. “It’s scary because people can get hurt,” Landi said. A short landing can hurt your ankles. The vault is dangerous.”

  • “She’s opened her eyes to everybody that this can be done when I think a lot of people believed a female couldn’t do it,” Cécile Landi, Landi’s wife, told 60 Minutes. The vault adds to her recent and career achievements.
  • USA Gymnastics said her sixth world championships appearance was unprecedented. It follows over a month after Biles won a record eighth U.S. Gymnastics title.
  • Biles is attempting a comeback after a nearly two-year absence, but has not yet decided to compete in the Paris Olympics.

What is the Yurchenko double pike vault?

  • A round-off entry onto the springboard, a back handspring onto the vaulting table, and two flips are required. Natalia Yurchenko, a Soviet world champion, initiated the move.
  • At the 1983 Budapest World Championships, she won an all-around gold medal, as reported by the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

What skills are named after Biles?

  • USA Gymnastics lists four other skills named after Simone Biles: two floor exercises, one balance beam, and one vault. The Biles II is a triple-twisting double-tucked salto backwards, while the Biles floor element is a double layout half-on roundoff.
  • A salto is a hand-free flip. The Biles balance beam routine includes double twists and a double backflip dismount. The Biles vault is a Yurchenko half-on with two twists, like her new move.
