A Guide to Making the Base of a Tres Leches Cake: Put butter in a 9×13 casserole dish and preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Put together three bowls for mixing. Sift together one cup of flour, one and a half teaspoons of baking powder, and one-fourth of a teaspoon of salt in a large bowl. The egg whites and yolks should be separated and placed in the two other bowls.

Using an electric mixer set to high speed, beat egg yolks with three-quarters of a cup of sugar for two minutes, or until the yolks have turned a pale yellow color. Mix in one-third of a cup of milk and one teaspoon of vanilla extract. Continuously beat the egg whites at a high speed for one minute, or until soft peaks appear.

Pour in the remaining quarter cup of sugar while the mixer is running, and continue beating on high speed for one minute, or until the egg whites are firm but not dry. After pouring the egg yolk mixture over the flour mixture, use a spatula to gently blend the two ingredients. Through the use of the spatula, gently fold in the egg white mixture until it is just incorporated.

Before baking at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for thirty to thirty-five minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean, pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it out to make the surface even. One-third of a cup of heavy whipping cream, twelve ounces of evaporated milk, and nine ounces of condensed milk should be mixed together in a large measuring cup (or a bowl with a pouring lip) to make the three-milk syrup.

While the cake is still warm, use a fork to make holes all over the surface of the cake. Pour the milk mixture over the cake in a slow and steady stream.
To Prepare the Frosting Made with Whipped Cream: After pouring two cups of cold heavy whipping cream and two tablespoons of sugar into a large mixing bowl that has been cooled, whisk the mixture on high speed for one and a half to two minutes, or until it is thick, whipped, and spreadable. Spread the mixture over the cake using a spatula, and if desired, decorate it with berries.
