It’s no longer a small competition or arrogance, though. Boruto does it because he knows that the better he is, the easier it will be for Naruto to be Hokage of Konoha.

While the beating almost killed Mitsuki, it made Sarada train with Sasuke even though she was already weak. Now, Boruto is trying to level up with Kakashi. In Episode 171, he makes huge steps forward because his new Rasengan is much stronger than he thought it would be.

The way Boruto blows wind Rasengan couldn’t pierce Deepa’s metal body, so he’s trying to make one that’s even stronger than the ones that came before him, like Naruto, Minato (Boruto’s grandpa), and Naruto’s trainer, Jiraiya. Because of this, Kakashi wants him to fight the mean canine Shojoji instead of trying out the move on some rocks.
Boruto thinks he knows how to use the chakra bomb thanks to Shikadai. Kakashi allows the fight to happen after taking the prisoner to a military base. The next fight is a total brawl, with Shojoji desperately trying to eat Boruto. He doesn’t like the kid because Boruto helped stop the Mujina Bandits.

This gives him a chance to use his Rasengans, but Shojoji’s wind shield blocks the first one and sends it to the roof. The ruler thinks Boruto isn’t strong enough, but he’s really just trying to see how s Shojoji fares.

Boruto, on the other hand, passes out because his body is so tired. This Rasengan will be an even more powerful tool once he learns how to better control his levels and chakra nature.
If it doesn’t hurt his body as much, he can already make it unnoticeable. With Kakashi and Naruto’s help, as well as information from Konohamaru, another Rasengan user, Boruto may become the best Rasengan user ever. Kakashi can feel this because he is amazed at how smart this new generation is. He won’t tell Boruto this, but he thinks his generation could be better than his father’s.
