AEW Champ Swerve Strickland Reveals Influence Behind His Eye Makeup :Thanks to his unique and strong character work, the current AEW World Champion has made himself stand out on AWE TV. In a recent interview on “The Bootleg Kiev Podcast,” Strickland talked about how that image came to be. He said that he wanted to make his “mogul” character out of his love of horror movies and hip-hop.
“That’s two very different genres, but if I bleed these together, I can kind of create something very unique and new,” he said. “It’s so far-fetched … but it fits.”
Strickland’s physical look has been a big part of his on-screen persona. On his way to the ring, he usually wears dark eye makeup. This is partly because Strickland likes scary movies, but he also says that one character motivated him.
“After the All In match … I was like ‘I’m a big fan of Sweeney Todd,” he said. “Let me make the eyes a little darker…” Let me get a little more into the character and make it darker so that I feel like, “Okay, there’s something off about Swerve that isn’t about anyone else on this team.”
The reason Strickland has remained at the top of AEW in recent months—despite the fact that he acknowledges that talent in the ring needs to be exceptional—is his unique personality. He defeated Claudio Castilian on “AEW Collision, “where he successfully defended the title against Samoa Joe, the winner of the world title.
