The play’s contact instantly became a talking point, but the opportunity vanished as soon as it presented itself, as a Derrick White block on P.J. Jayson Tatum attempted a shot with less than a minute left in regulation, but Mavericks forward Derrick Jones Jr. blocked it, creating a fast-break opportunity.
Leading the break, Dallas’ Kyrie Irving dribbled a bounce ball to Washington, who was on a roll and had a half-step edge over Boston’s defence. Washington’s speed carried him well past the rim, but White swiftly closed the distance and caught up to execute a clean chase-down block.
In addition to White’s matchup, Boston’s Jaylen Brown applied pressure to Washington. If not for his teammate, Brown could have had a chance to make an impact on the ball.
But as he leaped for the hoop, Brown made some contact with Washington. There have been concerns raised about such contact.

A replay of White’s block was shown on the ABC broadcast, and play-by-play announcer Mike Breen made a strong statement over the non-call.
Breen stated on the broadcast, “It was a great block, but there should have been a foul call.” “On this P.J. Washington play, Jaylen Brown gives someone a shove in the back. Although both players blocked it, the call ought to have been a foul.”
Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd stated following the game, “It appeared to be a foul, in my opinion. However, there wasn’t a foul because it wasn’t called.”
The NBA will release a “Last Two Minute Report” that details good and bad calls (as well as no calls) made in the final two minutes of the game due to the close nature of Game 2.
