  • 1.5 tbsp olive oil or coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp corn starch
  • 2 tbsp of nutritional yeast for OR 1 tbsp coconut sugar*
  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne powder

Instructions

Set oven temperature to 425 F (210 C).
Sweet potatoes should be peeled and cut into 1/2-inch cubes. After transferring it to a baking pan lined with paper or silicon, mix in the nutritional yeast, corn starch, olive oil, and salt (or coconut sugar for roasted sweet potatoes that are sweeter). If using, sprinkle on some spice and toss to coat. Make sure the sweet potatoes are evenly distributed and do not touch or overlap one another. After about 15 minutes, turn the sweet potatoes over and continue baking for another 30 minutes.

Notes

If preparing a more savory recipe, use nutritional yeast and coconut sugar to enhance the sweetness of the sweet potatoes.

Tips for Crispy Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Sharpen Your Knife: By being able to cut through the sweet potato without using excessive pressure, which sometimes leads to hands and blades slipping, you’ll be able to cut the potato much more easily and safely.

Make Use of a Large Baking Sheet: packed pans result in steaming veggies that become mushy and soggy. To promote crispy caramelization, make sure the sweet potatoes are not overlapping and have adequate space.

Turn Every 12 to 15 Minutes: You want to turn them to promote even baking, but you also don’t want to rotate them too frequently since it can impede the caramelization process.

FAQs AND QUESTIONs

How to Pick a Good Sweet Potato

Sweet potatoes are available year-round, but fall through winter are when they taste the best. Here are some helpful hints for selecting sweet potatoes that are ideal for roasting:

Select sweet potatoes with orange or red skins; they work best when roasted using this technique since they are less starchy and more sugary, preventing drying out. These yams are occasionally mislabeled.

Examine the Skins: Select firm sweet potatoes free of bruises, wet/soft patches, or discolorations on their smooth skins.

Do you have to boil sweet potatoes before baking?

It is possible to expedite the baking process by boiling your sweet potatoes before to baking. But boiling them also takes time, so why not just put them all in the oven to save yourself some dishes?

Do you have to peel sweet potatoes before roasting?

Again, personal preference but I find the texture and flavour for this particular method to be best when the sweet potatoes are peeled.
