Gluten-Free Tater Tots Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds russet potatoesabout 3 large or 4 medium potatoes
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ – 1 tsp saltor to taste
  • 1 – 2 tbsp gluten-free all-purpose flourNOT almond or coconut flour

Instructions

Choose whether to cook them in the oven or in an air fryer. Set your oven to 425°F (220°C) if you plan to cook them there.

First, get the potatoes ready. Make sure there is approximately one inch of water covering the russet potatoes in a big saucepan or Dutch oven. After bringing the water to a boil, lower the temperature to a simmer. Place the lid on and let the potatoes simmer for 7-8 minutes. At this point, they should be undercooked, or “parboiled.” It’s advantageous as you don’t want soggy tots. When the potatoes are cold enough to handle, let them cool.

Using the thickest section of a box grater, shred the parboiled potatoes. Grated potatoes should have as much liquid removed as possible by patting and draining with a fresh dish towel or cheesecloth.

Move them into a big basin. To the potatoes, add the onion and garlic powders, 1-2 tablespoons of gluten-free all-purpose flour, and a tsp or more of kosher salt. It should be simple to deal with, but not very sticky or wet. Take a look at the image below.

Create tots out of the potato mixture. As an alternative, to simplify this process, use parchment paper. After spreading some of the potato mixture over the edge of a sheet of parchment paper, coil it up to form a log. Slice the wood into pieces measuring 1 to 1½ inches, reshaping the tots as needed.

After arranging the tots on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper, freeze them for approximately ten minutes. This action strengthens them.

Let the tots cool for about five minutes before serving after baking or air-frying them to your preferred degree of crispiness. Have fun!

When the tots are solid and frozen, toss them in a tiny bit of olive or avocado oil to improve browning and keep them from sticking.

Air Fryer: Set your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) in the interim. Gently place the tots in the air fryer basket that has been preheated in a single layer. To ensure consistent browning on both sides, cook the tots for a total of 10 to 15 minutes, flipping them every 5 minutes. They ought to be crispy and golden. Keeping an eye on them while they air fry is a good idea because air fryer models and sizes might vary slightly in air fry timeframes.

Notes

Choose russet potatoes for optimum results. Tater tots are fluffy and crispy due to their high starch content.

Freeze the tots before air-frying or baking. Freezing the tots for 10 minutes before cooking helps them maintain their shape and crisps the outside.

Instead of russet potatoes, use sweet potatoes to make gluten-free sweet potato tater tots. After pair-boiling and cooling, I remove the sweet potato peel.

Potato Skin: Personal preference. I leave potato skin on for flavour, texture, and nutrition. However, peel them before grinding for a smoother texture or a conventional tater tot look. Cool the potatoes after boiling!

Cheese: Add cheese to tater tots for flavour and gooeyness. We like 1/2 cup grated parmesan or shredded cheddar.

Uncooked: These homemade tater tots can be frozen for 3 months. Enjoy them by air-frying or baking as described below. Since they’re frozen, add 3–4 minutes to cooking time.

Store leftover cooked tater tots in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Avoid soggy tots by placing a paper towel at the bottom of the container or between layers.

For freezing, place cooked and cooled potato tots in a single layer on a baking sheet. Put the baking sheet in the freezer for a few hours to freeze the tots. Store the frozen tots in a resealable freezer-safe bag or airtight container for up to 3 months.

Reheat tater tots in the oven or air fryer. Air-frying them makes them crispiest. Shake the basket halfway through warming in your air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for 5-8 minutes. Alternatively, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C), place the frozen tots in a single layer on a baking sheet, and bake for 10-15 minutes, flipping halfway through, until hot and crispy.
