Best Instant Pot Ribs Recipe – Learn Like a Pro : One of those dinners that will always, always make me feel like a rock star because of how wonderful they turn out and how little work I have to do is cooking soft, barbecued ribs at home.

 

Best Instant Pot Ribs Recipe – Learn Like a Pro

My favourite rib recipe is generally these slow cooker ribs, but for those of us who don’t always plan dinner ahead of time to get the slow cooker out in the morning, the instant pot also makes wonderful ribs.

 

Ingredients

  • 1-2 racks pork ribs (*see note below)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon light brown sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup apple juice , or ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke , optional*
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce , homemade or store-bought (*see note)

 

 

Instructions

If necessary, remove the membranes from the back of the ribs.

Apply seasonings to the ribs’ two sides.

 

In the bottom of the instant pot, place the wire trivet rack.

Pour in the apple juice (or apple cider vinegar), water, and liquid smoke (not necessary, but highly suggested for that wonderful smoky flavour).

 

With the meat side facing out, stand the ribs upright. Once you have a single, sizable rack of ribs, arrange them in a circle around the pot.

Close the vent and fasten the lid.

 

Cook for 25 minutes on high pressure by using the “manual” or “pressure cook” buttons.

After 15 minutes of letting the pressure release normally, change the valve to rapid release when the timer beeps.

 

After removing the ribs with care, spread BBQ sauce over them on a sizable baking sheet lined with foil.

To caramelise the barbeque sauce, broil them for two to three minutes in the oven.

Notes

*To cook spare ribs, add 5 to 10 minutes (lower number for delicate ribs and lower altitude, higher number for very “fall-off-the-bone” ribs).
*In your neighbourhood grocery store, liquid smoke is located next to the barbeque sauces. It will give the ribs a wonderful smoky flavour.

FAQs 

How long to cook ribs in the instant pot or pressure cooker:

25–30 minutes for baby back ribs

30 to 35 minutes for spare ribs

 

Use the lower number for low altitude and cook them for a little longer for high altitude.

Additionally, they will get more “fall-off-the-bone tender” the longer you cook them. Try cooking them for a little less time if you want them to be soft but still have their shape.

What size instant pot for instant pot ribs?

Any 6 quart or larger instant pot will work!

Removing the membrane from the ribs:

Depending on where you buy your ribs, they may still have the white, shiny membrane connective tissue on the back (bone side) of the ribs. I buy mine from Costco and they already have the membranes removed. Check to make sure the membrane on your ribs has been removed and if it hasn’t, follow these steps to remove it:

 

Just flip the ribs so the top (meaty part) is face down. 

Slide your fingers or a butter knife under the membrane and rip it off.

No special skills needed here, just use your fingers to yank it up and off the ribs.
