In order to serve, each individual should be given the opportunity to spoon a bit of the beef mixture into a lettuce leaf. As if you were making a tortilla, wrap the lettuce around the beef, and then enjoy!

  • 16 Boston Bibb or butter lettuce leaves
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • ¼ cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons minced pickled ginger
  • 1 dash Asian chile pepper sauce, or to taste (Optional)

Directions

Put the whole lettuce leaves aside after you have washed them and patted them dry, taking care not to rip them.

With a big skillet, bring the oil to a temperature of medium-high. After adding the beef, continue to heat and stir it for five to seven minutes, until it is browned and crumbly.

Transfer the meat to a basin after draining and discarding the oil. Put the onion in the same skillet and cook it for five to seven minutes while stirring it until it is just soft.

The hoisin sauce, garlic, soy sauce, vinegar, ginger, and chile pepper sauce should be thoroughly mixed in until they are completely incorporated.

After the beef has been cooked, add the water chestnuts, green onions, and sesame oil. Cook and stir the mixture for approximately two minutes, or until the onions begin to wilt.

A large serving platter should have lettuce leaves arranged around the perimeter, and the beef mixture should be spooned into the middle of the platter.
